Greenwich Smart Bins
18 state-of-the-art solar-powered smart bins now being used in Greenwich, UK.
20:00 13 August 2018
A total of 18 smart bins have been installed in the borough of Greenwich as part of the project that aims to determine the potential value of IoT connectivity in improving the efficiency of waste collection. The bins are solar-powered and equipped with sensors designed to monitor the level of litter they have collected. The sensors send alerts to authorities when they need to be emptied. This is managed using PEL’s BriteBin fill-level reporting software and a wireless transmitter that facilitate the bin’s Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.
One set of bins, one for general waste and the other for recycling waste, is installed in nine of Greenwich’s busiest high street locations, replacing existing traditional bins. Aside from sensors, they are also equipped with a state-of-the-art compaction system, which increases the bin’s capacity by up to ten times over a standard bin of the same size.
