From Bond girls emerging in bikinis to charity swims, the top 10 greatest maritime moments

The top ten most memorable ‘maritime moments’ in the past 500 years have been revealed.

Sir Steve Redgrave’s five consecutive Olympic gold medals have topped the top ten most memorable maritime moments in the past 500 years based on the votes cast by 1,000 Britons polled by PSP Southampton Boat Show.

Among those that made the list include two scenes from James Bond movies. Daniel Craig emerging from the sea in his pale blue trunks in Casino Royale pipped both David Beckham on the Thames in a speedboat for the Olympics, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee flotilla, which landed sixth position in the poll.

Meanwhile, in fourth place was Ursula Andress wearing an iconic white bikini for the introduction of the franchise’s first de facto Bond girl in Dr. No.

David Walliams swimming the English Channel in 10 hours 34 minutes in 2006 was voted the second most iconic moment.

Murray Ellis, Managing Director of PSP Southampton Boat Show said: 'As one of the biggest events in the marine world takes place this week, it’s a great opportunity for us to look back at those iconic moments in history that shaped the sailing sector.

'Not only key historical occasions but also movie moments that really help raise the profile of water sports in general.

'Encouraging people to try out new water based activities is a key objective of this year’s show and with our new attractions and hundreds of boats to climb aboard, many being unveiled for first time; it really will be a spectacular Show.'
