Countries all over the world are aiming to become the first one to deploy 5G, the next generation of wireless technology. 5G promises ultra-high speed mobile internet speeds and greater capacity, allowing users to download a full HD movie in just a couple of seconds.
The US, which won the race to 4G, is driven to win the race to 5G. To make this happen, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposed to conform to 3.5 GHz band’s licensing rules to the same standards that helped the US win the race to 3G.
With the modified rules, the license term in the band is extended from three to ten years. The license area size is also increased to partial economic areas or counties. This will result in 416 to 3,144 different license areas rather than 74,000.
