On Monday, Fakenham Town Council proposed the idea to residents, saying that the project that could “increase the town’s tourist and visitor potential.” If approved, the scheme would see the council utilising modern smart phone technology that visitors can use to get historic information on some of the town’s most iconic sights.
The council plans to install a plaque in each site that will feature a QR code that smartphone users can scan. If there is sufficient funding, the council hopes to include both written and video content.
The project could be funded through an EU grant, which has been provisionally approved. If successful, the grant will cover 60per cent of the cost. The remaining 40per cent will be shouldered by North Norfolk District Council.
Town mayor George Acheson said that the scheme will potentially stimulate trade and could result to a new part-time job. He also expects the trail to secure and increase employment in the town, especially in hospitality outlets.
The use of QR codes to give people a tour of a town’s history has been previously used by Sheringham, which introduced an interactive heritage trail that ran from Easter through to end of October.
