EE 5G trial sites and first cities revealed.
12:25 16 December 2018
Fotis Karonis, BT/EE Group’s executive advisor on 5G, has revealed the cities in the UK to get 5G ahead of the others at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit.
EE, which was formed when T-Mobile and Orange merged, is set to become the first to provide 5G in the United Kingdom. It is expected to deliver the service first to some of UK’s most densely populated areas, including London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester.
The second wave of 5G deployment will cover Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
In related news, BT/EE has confirmed the removal of Huawei infrastructure from the core of Britain’s 3G and 4G backbone due to concerns that it may be used by the Chinese government to spy on people. However, Huawei hardware is still deployed albeit not for crucial services.
Despite the move, EE is still implementing 5G trials across the country partly with Huawei. The following areas will be the first for the 5G on-location trials due to the level of foot traffic they receive - Provost Street, City Road, Central Street, Old Street, Cheapside, St. Paul’s, Finsbury Circus Garden, Clerkenwell Street and Bartholomew Square.
