Communications giant EE has announced that 5G mobile connectivity is coming next year to 16 UK cities, including Liverpool, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester.
The firm, which currently runs two 5G trials in Canary Wharf and east London, is committed to reaching a total of 1,500 sites by next year.
The announcement, which has been described as “a massive boost for the city", was welcomed by Liverpool politicians.
Gary Millar, Liverpool's deputy mayor, said: "5G is 1,000 faster than 4G, running at speeds of100 gigabits a second.
"It has an agility and flexibility that we have never seen before.
"It's a huge game changer for business in the city. It will make a massive difference."
Cabinet member for city services, Cllr James Noakes, added: “Bringing 5G to Liverpool is incredibly important not only for our growing digital and creative sectors but for all parts of business and society.
"As a city council, we have already been discussing how we can facilitate it best whilst taking a lead in using 5G for social care.
"To be able to offer residents and businesses the most up to date technical infrastructure gives Liverpool’s attractiveness to new enterprise a considerable advantage.
"Increasing reliability and network speed for people living and working in our city is something that we're excited to be doing."
