It has been reported that Teri Hatcher is to quit her role as Susan Mayer in Desperate Housewives.

The Daily Mail reports that the 45-year-old actress has "given in her notice and is making active preparations to move on".

Hatcher has played the lead role in the popular series for seven years and it has been said that by quitting, she will put the future of the whole show in jeopardy.

The show's creator, Marc Cherry, signed a deal with ABC last October giving the show a stay of execution for two years if its leading cast members remained on board.

However, all the lead characters will be out of contract after the next season of the programme.

A Spokesperson for ABC said: "We are working on the next season at the moment and we haven't got anything to say about the one after."
