Hollywood star Dennis Hopper had filed for divorce from wife Victoria Duffy, it has been reported.

The 73-year-old actor-director, who is battling prostate cancer, started proceedings in Los Angeles, citing 'irreconcilable differences'.

According to reports, he is to seek joint custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter, offering to pay spousal support to Duffy.

Hopper cancelled all travel plans in October to focus on treatment for the illness.

The 'Easy Rider' star finished shooting the second season of 'Crash' last year, a TV version of the Oscar-winning 2004 film of the same name.

Hopper also has several film projects in production.
