With more and more consumers shopping online, bricks-and-mortar businesses are now using modern technology, including highly-sophisticated tracking software, to keep up.
CityCo, which manages companies at Manchester and Salford’s city centres, uses four cameras to monitor footfall. They are strategically located on Market Street, Exchange Square, St Ann’s Square and King Street.
Springboard, the company that analyses the collected data, said: "Utilising High Definition video, it is a real-time video analytics engine that utilises advanced image processing algorithms to turn video into actionable intelligence.
"TST is a camera based tracking technology and, unlike other counting technologies, can cope with the vagaries in light that typically occur in external locations and which can undermine the degree of accuracy achieved.
"TST uses the camera as an “eye” but does not store any images so there are no privacy nor data protection implications."
Phil Schulze, manager of Manchester's Business Improvement District (BID), said: "The BID has historically funded the provision of four footfall cameras in selected locations around the city centre retail district, and will continue to do so as part of its business plan.
"These cameras are provided by Springboard and this service is for the benefit of BID levy payers, as it means that data on footfall trends can be provided on the BID’s website and direct to businesses.”
"It also means that the BID can measure the footfall impact of its public events, such as Halloween in the City and the King Street Festival."
