Celebrity Deaths of 2020 So Far

The celebrity world seems to have been rocked by a variety of deaths over the past few years.

We’ve lost great singing legends like David Bowie and wonderful comic geniuses like Victoria Wood. Yet, it looks like 2020 has already seen its fair share of celebrities passing away, so we’re going to take a look at some of the most high-profile deaths of this year so far.

Terry Jones, Actor, Screenwriter, Director

Everyone was left feeling quite blue on January 21 when the news broke of Terry Jones passing away. Being a part of the famous Monty Python comedy team, he was responsible for the creation of several films in the series. Not only that, but Jones would make his directorial debut with the Monty Python and the Holy Grail film, co-directing it with animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam.

Jones had been battling degenerative aphasia for several years but passed away from frontotemporal dementia – a rare form of the disease. His wife, Anna Soderstrom was by his side at the time of his death.

Neil Peart, Musician

The rock world was given a stunning blow when news broke of the death of Rush drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart on January 10. Having been diagnosed with glioblastoma (an aggressive form of brain cancer) three and a half years prior to this date, Peart’s passing was lamented by many fans and fellow musicians. He kept the illness a secret from outsiders, only informing people within his inner circle.

Peart succumbed to the illness on January 7, in Santa Monica, California. He is survived by his wife, American photographer Carrie Nuttall, and their daughter Olivia.

Rocky Johnson, Professional Wrestler

The likelihood is that everyone has heard of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson for his wrestling and movie careers. Yet, before The Rock was Rocky Johnson, his father. Johnson was the first black Georgia Heavyweight Champion and won the WWE World Tag Team Championship with Tony Atlas in 1983, becoming the company’s first black champions.

It was on January 15 that Johnson passed away at the age of 75 in his Lutz, Florida home, succumbing to Cardiac arrest secondary to pulmonary embolism. His son paid tribute to Rocky, while other professional wrestlers including Hulk Hogan sent out their condolences.

Christopher Tolkien, Author

While J.R.R Tolkien is known as one of the great authors in history, thanks to his famous The Lord of the Rings novels, his son Christopher Tolkien was an established and accomplished writer in his own right. In fact, he would spend some of his time editing his father’s works, including The Silmarillion, whilst also famously drawing the maps to accompany the original The Lord of the Rings books, following the success of The Hobbit.

Tolkien passed away at the age of 95 while in Draguignan, Var, France.
