CCTV in Lincolnshire Cabs could be Compulsory
East Lindsey District Council considers making CCTV mandatory in all taxi and private hire cars.
15:18 09 December 2020
East Lindsey district councillors are consulting on whether to make CCTV in all taxi and private hire cars mandatory starting next year in a bid to ensure the safety of both passengers and drivers.
Currently, taxi drivers and private hire cars have the option to not install CCTV cameras. The consultation, which will take place between December 3 and March 5 next year, will determine if this voluntary system will remain in place. The councillors will weigh the benefits against the disadvantages and concerns raised prior to making a decision.
The council’s portfolio holder for finance, councillor Richard Fry, said: “We have a number of taxi and private hire vehicles that operate within the district and it is important that everybody’s safety is paramount, and sometimes CCTV can be a tool which is used as part of this.
"The consultation is open until March and we would urge residents and businesses alike to have their say.”
