Cambridgeshire County Council Solar Farm
Cambridgeshire County Councils unveils plans for a pioneering solar farm.
01:24 27 April 2020
Cambridgeshire County Council has unveiled plans of building a 2.7MW solar farm and battery storage system on an old landfill site near Peterborough. The facility, which will be the first of its kind in East of England, is the council's third solar announcement this month.
Commenting on the project, which was first announced in January 2019, Councillor Josh Schumann, said: "Utilising an old landfill site in this way is really quite innovative and has the potential to be replicated elsewhere, creating a source of green and clean energy for the future."
The application documents state that the revenues from the solar farm will go towards the continued delivery and development of Cambridgeshire County Council's frontline service. The electricity will also be used to supply large local businesses, with the battery energy storage system providing grid stability and energy balancing services."
The council is also currently working on a 29MW ground-mounted solar farm and 2.5MW solar carport with battery storage located at Babraham Park and Ride in Great Shelford Parish.
The council is set to launch a social media campaign to educate local residents and businesses about the project. They will also be given the chance to provide feedback on proposals ahead of the submission of the full planning application.
