Are prescriptions really free for children and over 60’s?

What’s the truth about free NHS Calpol? This was the question raised when a mum posted on Facebook that all medicines are free in a large pharmacy chain. She said she read a poster that said:  "if you register your details under the 'minor ailments scheme', all medicines etc for children are free.” 

 

But is it really free? 

 

The minor ailments scheme has been around for about ten years in some local pharmacies and it is designed to both help patients who can’t afford certain medicines and at the same time, take some pressure off busy GPs and packed A&E departments. The scheme offers consultation as well. The scheme is highly useful when GP practices are closed such as in the evenings and during weekends. 

 

However, Neal Patel from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said that people shouldn’t get carried away. 

"You can't just walk into a pharmacy and stock up on Calpol for your kids. That's not the way it works."

He explained: "It's an opportunity for people to just walk in on the day and see a pharmacist for advice, rather than waiting for a GP appointment."
