Communications giant British Telecom (BT) has confirmed that it is investing £900,000 to replace 36 old telephone booths in Southampton with 18 InLink boxes that provide free calls and WiFi service to residents and tourists. The booths will feature smartphone charging ports, a 999 button and maps and information about services in the area. If approved, the InLink boxes will be installed at Houndwell Park, Above Bar Street and High Street, among others.
City council leader, Simon Letts, said that the £50,000 touch-screen telephones are an "excellent addition" to Southampton.
"The new boxes will be a real positive for the city because they offer those extra services," he said.
"I think the fact that they also provide useful information for visitors and tourists will also be a positive.
"They will act like little tourist information centres."
He added: "It will also be nice to get rid of the scrappy and horrible telephone boxes across the city – which are sadly often used as public conveniences."
