Bournemouth and Poole Councils have equipped their waste disposal and parking enforcement officers with “body-worn” cameras to protect them from abuse.
The move is part of Bournemouth Council’s Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS). The council’s enforcement officers are provided with a camera service by security firm 3GS, its parking enforcement officers by BCAM Ltd and its community enforcement officers by Insight Security.
While Bournemouth council currently uses a total of 30 cameras, Borough of Pooles uses only two and are assigned to waste staff.
In response to a Freedom of Information Request, the council said: "Environmental services have two body cameras which are owned by the council and worn by the outsourced security staff working on the gate at Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre, and at Millhams Community Recycling Centre which we operate on behalf of Bournemouth council.
"The data is kept in-house and owned by the council. We do not have the purchase details as they are several years old."
The cameras are attached to personnel’s’ uniform but they do not automatically record. Footage that is not used for policing purposes is automatically deleted after 31 days.
