Birkenhead 5G Mast Rejected

Wirral Council rejects plans for "unsightly" 5G mast in Birkenhead.

Wirral Council has formally rejected proposals for an 18-metre tall 5G mast on Price Street in Birkenhead. 

 

The council's committee report says that the 5G mast was "excessive" and poses risks of harming major plans to regenerate the town. These include building a high-quality office space, 651 new homes and a permanent market for the town. 

 

The report added: "The antennae is large, bulky and would clearly attract attention given that it would be on a structure 18 metres tall, which is clearly taller than surrounding streetlights.

 

"Whilst it is accepted that masts are common features within urban settings, the prominent location of this site, together with the height of the mast and unsightly antennae would result in it being far too visible.

 

"Given the utilitarian design, [this] would clearly harm the character of the area."

 

The council report continued: "This regeneration area sits directly to the south of where this mast will be sited, with a new residential neighbourhood being created (as part of the scheme) on the existing surface car park.

 

"The proposed mast would sit close to this scheme and could have a detrimental impact upon the character and setting of the scheme."
