Bedford 5G Testing

Testing of advanced 5G networks on connected and autonomous vehicles underway in Bedford.

Advanced 5G test networks are being deployed at Milbrook Proving Ground in Bedford to see if 5G connectivity solutions could be transferrable to road and rail systems. The scheme is part of the AutoAir project, one of six trials and testbeds that received funding from the government in March this year.

 

The project, which involves McLaren, Blue Wireless and Quortus, utilises a neutral host model so multiple operators can share a single network. The goal is to enable denser, targeted network coverage while minimising capital and operation expenditure.

 

In the coming months, AutoAir will roll out pervasive 4G and 5G connectivity using a dense network of base stations. The network, which delivers ultrafast speeds and low-latency connectivity, will support the first UK’s connectivity trials for autonomous vehicles.
