More than 50% of yesterday evening's TV audience tuned in to watch Portuguese transsexual Nadia Almada win this year's Big Brother reality television show.
An average audience of 8.3 million tuned in to watch Nadia sweep to victory in the fifth series but the figures failed to reach the 9.4 million viewers who watched Kate Lawler's victory last year.
Nevertheless, the ratings are a big improvement on last year when 6.6 million watched the final show of the series.
Nadia received almost 3.9 million votes to claim victory from Jason who took second with 1.3 million votes.
Daniel and Shell received little support during the final week with 685,995 and 347,051 votes respectively.
The total number of voted cast were also up from last year's record low of 4.3 million votes but still lower than the totals for the first three series.
Nevertheless, Channel 4 will view the fifth series of the show as a big success as an average of 4.9 million viewers have watched this year's show.
That makes it the second most popular BB show, behind Big Brother 3.
