A freedom of information request has revealed that there are currently twelve CCTV cameras in Barrow.
The cameras, which are operated by Cumbria Constabulary, are located within and outside of the town centre. They are facing the entrance and the opposite sides of Egerton court and provide coverage of the area.
Recently, a proposal to install another security camera on Duke Street was submitted to Barrow Borough Council.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Police stated: “A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: “CCTV cameras can be extremely valuable to neighbourhood policing and are generally very welcome in local communities as they help to prevent and detect crimes such as antisocial behaviour and drug offending.
“Their use and positioning are based on statistical analysis of crimes and intelligence submitted to the police so they are used as effectively and efficiently as possible.”
Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall said: “People feel reassured knowing that there is more coverage in the town centres and in the quieter places where anti-social behaviour has been a problem in the past.
“As Commissioner I get contacted a lot by ordinary members of the public, councils and councillors about CCTV.
“They are generally welcomed by people but a balance has to be struck between intrusiveness and reassurance. CCTV can help prevent crime, but also give evidence when crimes are committed.
