The campaign to get Carter into Albert Square is growing, with the returning Barbara Windsor voicing her support for Sir Michael Caine to star in EastEnders.
The 68-year-old actress, legendary for her roles in the Carry On movies and as the spirited Peggy Mitchell in the gritty BBC soap, is keen for fellow eastender Sir Michael join her in Walford.
Sir Michael, star of films such as Get Carter and The Italian Job, has already spoken of how fond he is of the goings-on in the Square and his appearance in Walford could be just what the ailing soap needs to get it back on track.
A BBC spokeswoman confirmed to the Sun: "We'd be delighted to hear from Mr Caine."
Rival soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale have both benefitted from the arrival of big name stars.
Lord of the Rings wizard Ian McKellen recently lit up Weatherfield in a temporary role as author and conman Mel Hutchwright, while Patsy Kensit has become a permanent and extraordinarily popular fixture as the duplicitous Sadie King in Emmerdale.
Barbara Windsor is making her return to the Square as the Mitchell mum after being off our screens for two years following a bout of a case of the debilitating Epstein-Barr virus.
