Asda has pledged to help farmers by increasing the amount it pays to its milk supplier to 28p per litre. The farming union has welcomed the decision although it is less than what the farmers say they pay to produce each litre of milk which is 30-32p.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) said it was pleased Asda had recognised the "plight of the dairy industry" in its "hour of need.”
In a statement, Asda said: "Asda's origins are in dairy farming which is why we are acting in the best interests of our farmers and our customers by increasing the price we pay, introducing the Farmer's Marque label and not passing on any of the costs to customers - our retail price stays the same.”
Asda will start paying 28p per litre to its milk supplier Arla starting on Monday. However, it is not yet clear if Arla, Britain’s biggest milk co-operative, will pass on the increase in price to farmers.
NFU president, Meurig Raymond, has urged Arla to ensure that the payment will be given to the farmers.
