They may be fashionable but skinny jeans could be dangerous.
A 35-year-old woman has collapsed while her calves were swollen after wearing skinny jeans. Her story has now been published in the Journal of Neurology to raise awareness of the dangers of wearing clothes that are just too tight.
According to reports, the woman helped a relative move house and in the process, had to squat for hours as she emptied cupboards. She then experienced numbness in her feet and collapsed as she tried to stand up. Although she received immediate treatment, she was unable to work unaided for four days.
Doctors said that she suffered damaged muscles and nerve fibres in her lower legs due to prolonged compression while squatting.
Associate Professor Thomas Edmund Kimber, of the University of Adelaide in South Australia, said: "The present case represents a new neurological complication of wearing tight jeans."
Singer and Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon told Sky News that the news would not stop her wearing skinny jeans.
She said: "I think the story about wearing skinny jeans (being) dangerous is dangerous because actually people have been wearing skinny jeans for, how long now? And this is the first time I've ever heard that they could be potentially dangerous.
"I have so many skinny jeans at home and will continue to wear them because I think they are great."
