Following a two-week dispute after the management has asked some workers to leave their accommodation, angry Indian tea workers burned the bungalow owned by their boss killing him and his wife in the process.
The incident took place on Wednesday at Kunapathar in Assam state.
Local official SS Meenakshi Sundaram has confirmed that some tea garden workers surrounded the manager’s bungalow on Wednesday night and set it on fire. The manager’s two vehicles were also burned down. Later on, the charred bodies of Mridul Kumar Bhattacharyya and his wife, Rita were recovered from the debris.
Three people were detained following the incident.
This isn’t the first time that Mr Bhattacharyya had faced protests. Two years ago, there was also a protest at another tea estate. His tea factory near the state capital, was also burned by angry workers.
