Bear in mind that it may not only be your life you’re risking and unless it is essential- stay put.
Here are a few tips on navigating safely during winter
1.This is not the time to run out of fuel so ensure that you keep your fuel level topped up. Don’t let it get anywhere below the halfway mark so that you’ve always got sufficient amount of fuel to get somewhere totally warm and dry.
2.Keep an eye on the coolant level, your wipers and your lights. This is not difficult but all of these are vital things when you are trying to plough through storms or snow.
3.Before you start give yourself a good 15 to 20 minutes to check your car thoroughly. Thaw out the windscreen and make sure you get a clear view out of the rear window. Check the mirrors and the side windows and by the time you have finished inspecting all these things, the car will be cosy and warm inside.
4.Make sure you keep your distance once you get onto the road. No matter what, the extra distance can really give you stopping room and help prevent a serious accident. It’s a good idea to allow four seconds from the vehicle in front.
5.Drive more cautiously and slowly. Dangerous driving conditions typically mean that the unforeseen may just be lurking around the corner so take it slow so that you can manage, or bring your car to a halt if need be. Deep puddles, snowdrifts and ice are the common types of hazards you can look forward to.
6.Be absolutely sure of where you are going otherwise you’ll end up lost. If you are traveling somewhere you’ve never been before check the directions on the internet, key the address into your navigation. It’s not the right time to flaunt off your knowledge of shortcuts when it’s snowing outside. Stick to major roads where there will be other vehicles around in case you need assistance. If you are on a deserted country road, chances are you might not have a proper mobile signal either.
