Vodafone has formally filed the paperwork asking for the local council's permission to put up two 5G phone masts in Wigston. If approved, the masts, which will both measure 20m, will be built on the industrial estate near the Tesco and Lidl supermarkets and on Leicester Road near the Sainsbury's Local at the old Royal Oak pub.
Vodafone explained in the application documents that the masts are already in place. However, the company needs to install new masts to support the expansion of the network and to accommodate 5G infrastructure. It added that the site has been "carefully selected, set against a backdrop of commercial development being in front of a car washing facility and a local convenience store to provide necessary coverage whilst being situated as far away as possible from residential properties."
A statement that makes up part of the Leicester Road application states: "The pavement on the western side of Leicester Road at the junction with Granville Road hosts an existing streetwork telecommunications installation, providing vital local coverage and capacity in this busy part of Wigston. There is now a requirement to upgrade the site to provide improved coverage and capacity, most notably in relation to 5G services."
Meanwhile, a community information sheet included with both application reads: "As 5G technology is deployed across the country, more and more services will become available and our lifestyles, the economy and even the way we commute will be transformed.
