World Cup fans warned against Russian hackers and are advised to avoid the use of free WiFi as much as possible.

Days before the 2018 Fifa tournament, security experts have warned fans not to use free or public WiFi as much as possible. They said that Russian hackers are using sophisticated technologies that can decipher even the hotel a tourist is staying in and other personal details needed to steal their identity.

 

Simon Migliano, head of research at Top10VPN which reviews virtual private networks to boost security, Simon Migliano, said: “Football fans should be especially wary of easy to execute ploys by would-be fraudsters such as 'spoofing', where hackers can set up a fake network and advertise it as a legitimate hotspot.

 

"Once you're connected to these unsecured phoney networks, hackers can then intercept valuable data such as personal information and cookies to steal your identity.

 

"If you're connected to a fake WiFi spot, it's also easy for a hacker to check your saved wifi network names to figure out which hotel you're staying at - they then know which way to follow you home.”

 

Meanwhile, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) also warned tourists to avoid internet banking abroad saying that security details can easily be leaked.
