Wokingham Smart Drain Devices
Wokingham Borough Council to use smart sensors in drains to prevent flooding.
13:24 25 January 2021
Wokingham Borough Council has announced a scheme designed to fight flooding using smart solutions. Councillors have confirmed it would be testing smart ultrasonic sensors on drains in Earley to see their effectiveness.
According to planning documents, the sensors are designed to measure silt levels and waver levels as well as detect blocked drains. The sensors will then send early warning to allow the council to prepare for oncoming rain and storms.
The trial will run until the end of 2021 and the council will decide if they are effective and if the sensors can be deployed in other areas. The scheme is hoped not just to prevent significant damage caused by floods but also improve environmental conditions and prove that internet of things (IoT) can help make smart cities a reality. If proven to work, the council will invest in more IoT technologies deemed to help transform everyday life.
