Window 10 Webcam Issue
Microsoft’s Windows 10 update is causing havoc with users’ webcams.
21:01 07 September 2016
Microsoft’s Windows 10 update offers new exciting features but its new Camera Frame server has caused users’ webcams to stopped functioning after upgrading to the new software. The problem was due to the server’s inability to support uncompressed data. However many webcams still rely on compression when streaming video, which is why the devices keep on freezing.
Microsoft has already responded to the issue saying that it is working on fixing the problem and that it will add compressed video support as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Thurott.com contributor Rafael Rivera discovered that the Frame Server could be manually disabled to fix the issue. Below are the steps. Before you begin, it’s best to do a full backup of your computer.
WARNING: DO NOT CHANGE SETTINGS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING - CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL IF IN DOUBT.
· Open the Run command
· Type regedit and click OK to open the Windows registry
· Browse the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform
· Create a new platform folder and click DWORD (32-bit) Value
· Rename the new key EnableFrameMode. Click OK.
· Double-click the key and set it to 0 in the value data field. Click OK.
· Restart your computer.
Alternatively, you can roll back to the previous version within ten days of updating to Windows 10.
