Winchester City Council has discussed steps that need to be taken make council services available online as part of its medium-term financial strategy. They have also discussed the creation of a dedicated app and the deployment of free public WiFi to make Winchester a smart city.
Cllr Lucille Thompson, Liberal Democrat group leader, said that digitasation is a great way to save money but cautioned that “it might not be the silver bullet we are looking for.”
Cllr Caroline Horrill, council leader, on the other hand, said that they can replicate the success being enjoyed by other councils that have taken advantage of digital opportunities.
City councillor Rob Humby, who is also the executive member for environment and transport at Hampshire County Council, added: “We need to make sure it is expandable and it is able to accept any upgrades that come along,” he said.
“(Digitisation) does work well at the county council. I think it is successful as we are able to use it with other authorities at the appropriate level.”
