Apple’s latest product promises to take us into a new age of virtual reality (VR) but what does it actually do and what chance does it have of changing the home entertainment market? We can try to work this out by taking a look at what it offers and how technology has been shaping the way we get entertained.

How Technology Has Changed Our Entertainment So Far
There’s no doubt that the latest technology has been used to great effect in changing the entertainment industry in recent years. This can be seen in the advances made in the metaverse, artificial intelligence, and other emerging areas. All of this means that we can now do things such as watch movies and TV shows in the most convenient way possible.
Another example of modern technology transforming a classic form of entertainment can be seen we play roulette games for real money. Live-streaming is now used so that you can play at a real-life table that’s beamed online from a studio setting. A human dealer runs the game and this type of presentation has led to numerous versions of the game with key differences such as faster-than-average gameplay and random multipliers.
As for virtual reality, it’s already available but not as many widespread as many analysts had predicted it would be by this stage. Movie fans can use the Bigscreen tool with their PCs to watch movies or chat in a VR setting. Museums and art galleries have also taken advantage of the possibilities offered by VR to update their presentations, but there's a feeling that there's a lot more still to come.

What Is the Apple Vision Pro VR Headset About?
Could the recent unveiling of this new headset from Apple make VR more mainstream? The reaction so far has been interesting, with many reviewers impressed by the size and power of the device but unconvinced by the price tag.
It works through the use of a couple of small screens that fit into each of the eyepieces. They’re so powerful that they each have more pixels than any 4K TV, which means that users can see the world around them in incredible detail. Gesture controls using infrared cameras provide a simple and intuitive form of control.
This technology is undoubtedly innovative, and it’s easy to imagine how people will be excited at the prospect of using one, but questions remain over how viable it is as a commercial product. The price tag of $3,499 (£2,816) is steep and there are no details yet of when it might be launched in the UK.
The biggest question mark is over what people will actually do with this headset. Described by Apple as allowing us to enter the era of spatial computing, they compare its price to the home cinema and gaming setup that they think it could replace.
The idea seems to be that users will want to use the Vision Pro VR device for all of their work and entertainment in the near future, keeping it on for hours at a time every day. At the moment, this is difficult to imagine but the fate of this headset is probably going to be decided by whether or not it’s widely accepted as a new way of receiving our entertainment.
