WiFi Signal Tapestry

Although Wifi signals are around us much of the time, they are not visible to the human eye and it is difficult to visualise what they may look like.

A tapestry by Richard Vijgen from the Netherlands, has been created, to make WiFi visual and tangible.

 

With an clever combination of thread and thermochromic thread, the tapestry will change colour when heated.  The tapestry is to be connected to a computer, which can detect all WiFi signals present in a room.  The threads change colour, depending on the heat added to them.

 

The tapestry is predominantly blue with flickering white patterns across it.  It helps the viewer to imagine the tapestry being divided into 13 channels vertically, with channel one on the left and thirteen on the right.   

 

The more white flickers in the middle of the tapestry, the more WiFi signals in the room are using channels 5 and 6 on the WiFi and the more white flickers, usually the slower connection.  

 

Vijgen liked the tapestry idea, as he felt it was well suited for a domestic location.

 

Part of the appeal of the WiFi tapestry is how dynamic it is; hubalways changing as opposed to a regular picture on a wall.
