Bitglass, a cloud security specialist, have conducted an experiment to see if employees can put their corporate data at risk by connecting to unsecured, free WiFi connection.
For their experiment, they set up WiFi hotspots in random public spaces, which was taken advantage of by 187 unique devices. Analysing the traffic and data, Bitglass found that one in four people accessed enterprise cloud applications over unsecured WiFi hotspot, putting corporate data at risk. These applications include Office 365, Salesforce, Adobe Marketing Cloud, ADP, Slack and ASANA.
Rich Campagna, CEO at Bitglass, stressed the importance of knowing the risks of connecting to a public WiFi especially when corporate data is being accessed. He explained: "Over the past several years, organisations have enabled employee mobility and collaboration by deploying cloud applications. While the productivity benefits of this move are clear, businesses must wake up to the fact that a risky login over an unprotected WiFi hotspot or a single unauthorized share can subvert a company's entire security investment."
