Why Have Home CCTV?
Does installing CCTV in your home worth it?
19:50 28 June 2017
Installing domestic CCTVs is a cheap way of improving security in your home. It can help authorities in identifying intruders and can deter potential burglars, which can help in keeping your insurance premiums down. Aside from warding off thieves and other criminals, CCTVs are also useful if you would like to keep an eye on your domestic workers. By knowing what is happening inside your home when you’re not around, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your children are treated right and that your household help are doing their job properly.
However, keep in mind that home CCTVs have downsides. If you’re not careful, they can be vulnerable to unauthorised access and can be used by hackers to spy on you and your family. Thus, it is important to make sure that they are password protected and that the password you’re using is unique and cannot be easily guessed.
It is also important that you consider the privacy of people in your household. Privacy expert Kate McMullan, associate at law firm Hogan Lovells, said: "You have to be very careful about how you process and store the footage you record. In particular, you must let people know that you are using CCTV, for example by putting a sign up, and not use CCTV in areas where people would normally expect privacy."
