Which Applications Benefit from IoT?

Internet of Things (IoT) has a wide range of applications that could prove to be extremely beneficial to many different types of industries.

Sensors can be used by healthcare companies to check on their patients’ wellbeing, by manufacturers to manage their customer equipment, and by utility companies to monitor performance, among others.

 

However, deploying, managing and operating IoT devices and gateways can be challenging for many business owners, especially for start-ups. Fortunately, there is no longer a need to configure servers and networks as well as develop applications from scratch. This is thanks to the growing number of cloud-based platform-as-a-service (Paas) offerings that support IoT-specific deployments. These services bring together the technology required to build a strong IoT infrastructure. These include:

 

·       IoT devices, which include all pre-existing devices and all latest additions or purchases. Examples are probes, sensors, and software installed on user devices.

 

·       Gateways, which manage groups of devices. An example is a building that contains all the sensors in one geographic area. Gateways play a role in local network management, security and data filtering.

 

·       Central IT platform, or the share hub that the gateways feed all their data back to.
