WhatsApp is following the footsteps of other social media platforms by finally launching a feature that will allow users to unsend their messages – even after they’ve been read. Ahead of the full roll out, WhatsApp updated its FAQ page to detail how it will work.
“Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat,” a WhatsApp note explains. “This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat, or if the message you sent contains a mistake.”
The message is automatically deleted as soon as users hit the delete button. The message will then be replaced with the following text: “This message was deleted.” This means that if you send a damning message to your boss, they will not be able to read it but they’ll still know that you’ve sent them a message.
To delete a message, follow these steps:
· Open WhatsApp
· Navigate to the chat with the offending message
· Tap and hold the message
· Choose Delete from the menu
· Optionally, select multiple messages to delete several items at once
· Tap Delete > Delete for Everyone
This feature has some limitations. Firstly, users only have seven minutes to decide whether or not they’ll delete the message. Secondly, both the sender and the recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp. If they’re not up to date, the feature won’t be supported.
