WhatsApp has introduced references to a new group voice call feature within the 2.17.70 beta release. The new feature allows users to add multiple people to a single VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone call. This enables users to make international calls while avoiding expensive call rates.
WaBetaInfo, a Twitter account that has accurately forecasted a number of unannounced WhatsApp features before, tweeted: “There are a lot of hidden references about group voice calls, but there is only one reference about group video calls,”
In the FAQ, WhatsApp pointed out that users would not be able to call 999, 911, or other emergency service numbers through the service. It said: "You must make alternative communication arrangements to make emergency calls,"
Some reports claim that WhatsApp also plans to bring the same feature to its video call feature.
WhatsApp has also recently rolled out Live Location, which allows users to track their friends’ movements in real-time within its iOS app. Previously, it allowed users to share their location as a stationary spot on a map.
WhatsApp says its new feature is “a simple and secure way to let people know where you are”.
