Whether you are buying a company car for the business or a vehicle that you can use for your work travels, it is important to be aware that there are differences to buying a personal vehicle. A company car will be a business asset and a representation of your company - read on for a few of the key considerations that you need to make to find the right vehicle.
Practicality
Practicality will be one of the most important factors to consider. For many people, a company car will need to be able to transport equipment and/or a certain number of people while for others it will simply be a way to get from A to B. Consider how the vehicle needs to be used so that you can find a car that is the right size. This should include considering the kind of journeys that you will be making, such as a smaller car for those driving in a city.
Economy
Economy will be another important factor, especially if you will be spending a lot of time behind the wheel. You should look for a vehicle with high MPG to keep costs down and so that you do not have to visit a petrol station often.
Diesel vs Petrol
Following this, you also need to decide between petrol and diesel. If you will be making long journeys, you might find that diesel is best while shorter, stop and start journeys are better suited to a petrol car.
Buying Options
You also need to consider the buying options and what will be best for your business. The main options are:
Buying Outright: Will work out as the cheapest option, but can put a significant dent into your finances upfront and it might be hard to afford a high-quality vehicle upfront.
PCP: A personal contract plan (PCP) deal can be a good option as they can provide flexibility with the option of giving the car back or paying for the rest halfway through the contract.
Finance: You could arrange a finance deal, which will allow you to spread the cost of the car across monthly installments. This can make it easier to afford a high-quality car and easier to budget for.
Electric
It is also worthwhile considering an electric car, which can be smart for a company car as they allow you to make big long term savings while also reducing environmental impact (this could also improve your reputation). There are many excellent options now available, but you will need somewhere to charge the car.
These are a few of the main considerations when choosing a company car. It is important to take your time so that you can find the right vehicle for your business needs and one that will tick all of the boxes.
