After months of speculation, Clarence House has announced that Prince William and girlfriend Kate Middleton are engaged.

William popped the question last month during a holiday to Kenya after asking permission from Kate's father.

The couple are set to get married next year after eight years together.

Their wedding will be the biggest royal event since Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981.

Clarence House has said: "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

"The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course."
