Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has thrown its own Christmas advert into the ring to rival the likes of established festive ad favourites John Lewis, Coca Cola and Marks & Spencer.
Entitled Christmas is for Sharing, the Sainsbury's ad has been made in conjunction with the Royal British Legion and focuses on the famous Christmas Day football match between British and German forces in 1914 in a rare break within the fierce battles of the first world war.
The story focused on a young British soldier who dared to venture from his trench to greet his rivals. He made connection with a young German soldier before the game started. As they returned to their respective trenches, the German solider is moved to discover that his British friend hid the gift of chocolate bar in his pocket.
Mark Given, head of brand communications, Sainsbury’s, said: “The Christmas truce is an emotive and cherished story in our history that is especially poignant in this First World War centenary year. That’s why we have worked together closely with the Legion to ensure we bring this moment to life with authenticity and respect.”
The Sainsbury’s advert came after John Lewis unveiled its latest Christmas offering - a heartwarming story involving a boy and his beloved companion, Monty the Penguin.
