VW will start recalling cars affected by the recent scandal in January and it is expected that the vehicles will be fixed by the end of 2016.
Following a board meeting to discuss the emission scandal, VW has appointed former finance chief Hans Dieter Poetch as its new chairman, who said that it would be “some time” before the carmaker could uncover details of the emission test cheating.
"Nobody is served by speculation or vague, preliminary progress reports," he said.
"Therefore it will take some time until we have factual and reliable results and can provide you with comprehensive information," he added, before declining to take any questions.
Meanwhile, chief executive Matthias Mueller said that only a few employees have been involved in the scandal. He also told employees at VW’s Wolfsburg home plant in Germany that the firm is facing changes that “will not be painless.”
"We will do everything to ensure that Volkswagen will stand for good and secure jobs in the future," he added.
