Colchester Council is set to receive £3.3million from the Local Full Fibre Network Fund, as confirmed by the Department for Media, Culture, Sport and Digital. The funding will be used to build a core network that will connect the London Broadband interchange with the town centre and Northern Gateway in Highwoods.
Councillor Theresa Higgins, the councillor responsible for commercial services, said: "The investment will ensure Colchester becomes one of the best-provisioned towns in the country, helping to assist the economic recovery which will be so vital over coming years.
"We've seen how the coronavirus crisis has underlined the importance for many of being able to work from home with reliable connectivity and Colchester will receive a world-class infrastructure as a result of this project."
Meanwhile, Amphora has also secured another £10million investment from Swedish operator VX Fiber. The funding will be used to expand the network and deliver faster broadband services to more than 25,000 customers.
