The University of Glasgow unveils plans to build a high-tech campus, hoped to become a world-renowned centre for nanotechnology and precision medicine

The University of Glasgow is set to build a high-tech campus in Govan on the banks of the Clyde. The university, which is investing £28million in the project, is currently bidding for a further £63million in funding. A further £27.5million will come from the Glasgow City region deal.

 

The site for the new high-tech campus, which is hoped to become a world-renowned centre for nanotechnology and precision medicine, is currently a disused car park at the southern end of the Clyde tunnel, near the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

 

Prof Sir Anton Muscatelli, University of Glasgow principal, said that the new innovation campus could create “Scotland’s Silicon Valley on the Clyde.”

 

He said: said: "I have no doubt that the innovation agenda and industries like quantum technology, nanofabrication and precision medicine can be to the 21st century Glasgow economy, what shipbuilding was in the past."

 

He added that the campus could bring hundreds of high-end jobs to the area.

 

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said: "It isn't just about those high-tech academic jobs, it's about all the other things that come with it.

 

"We are building homes, there will be new commercial and retail units, all sorts of new opportunities are being created."
