Openreach has kept the promise it made last year of bringing ultrafast, ultra-reliable and future-proof broadband in market towns and villages across the South West. The firm has recently confirmed that full fibre broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second is now available to more than 3,000 homes and businesses in Okehampton.
Connie Dixon, Openreach's Regional Partnership Director in the South West, said: "We're making great progress here in Okehampton, and our Full Fibre build has continued despite the obvious challenges. As well as keeping people connected using our existing network, our engineers have continued building the new infrastructure to make sure that as lockdown restrictions ease, we can support families, businesses and the economic recovery.
"I'd encourage everyone who can to upgrade to the new technology and take advantage of the many benefits. Full fibre is more reliable and more resilient, meaning fewer faults and more predictable, consistent speeds. It's also future-proof as we expect it to easily meet the growing data demand of future technologies for decades to come. Use the fibre checker on our website to check your postcode to see if full fibre is available."
Reacting on the news, Mel Stride, MP for Cental Devon said: "I have pressed for many years for better broadband for Okehampton and so I am delighted that Fibre-to-the-Premises is now available to thousands of households and businesses in the town.
"Good connectivity is essential for everyone; whether it's for working from home, home-schooling or helping businesses survive and thrive. Openreach engineers have been busy over the last few months making this possible and I will continue to push for more of our market towns and harder-to-reach communities to have access to better internet speeds."
