UK And South Korea 5G

The UK and South Korea team up to trial 5G on Seoul Metro and Glasgow Subway.

The UK and South Korea Governments are working together to launch the £2.4million 5G RailNext project. Under the agreement, a UK-led consortium, which includes Cisco, Soluis, the University of Strathclyde, Ampletime and Glasgow City Council, will trial 5G-powered ‘infotainment’ services in Scotland and South Korea. The project will see tourists and commuters getting access with travel information, streaming and gaming services using Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications.

 

 

 

The partnership is designed to drive Korean investment in the UK and provide opportunities for British firms in the Asian country.

 

 

 

The UK and South Korean governments will each provide £1.2million funding. Once of the beneficiaries is Cisco, which is already working with the BBC and others as part of a 5G rural connectivity project in Orkney, Shropshire and Somerset.

 

 

 

“5G is the future of connectivity and we want the UK to be a world leader,” said Digital Minister Margot James. “This collaboration with South Korea will explore innovative ways to use the technology to deliver content and services on transport networks in Seoul and Glasgow.
