UK 5G Mobile Update

Telcos and tech companies that are working to provide 5G coverage in the UK ahead of 2020 include Vodafone, BT and Ericsson.

5G refers to the newest generation of wireless mobile and broadband technology. It promises increased speed, capacity and a better user experience.

 

5G standards are yet to be established but many countries, including the UK have long been working towards the development of the network with the goal to deploy the technology ahead of 2020.

 

Vodafone UK became the first network provider to test 5G in the UK in 2017. Working together with Ericsson and Kings College London, the firm tested a standalone pre-standard 5G network using a prototype device in a 3.5 Ghz spectrum field in Central London. The company also partnered with Qualcomm, Nokia and Intel to continue its 5G research and prepare for the transition with continuous tests of services and technology.

 

Kye Prigg, head of networks at Vodafone UK said in a statement: “Right now, we’re also modernising our network by making smarter use of our existing mobile technology to keep ahead of consumption demands and provide the mobile coverage our customers deserve,”

 

CityFibre is also working towards providing gigabit fibre broadband to almost five million UK homes and businesses by 2025. This is expected to cover 50per cent of the UK government’s aim to deliver full fibre to 10 million homes and businesses.
