Sam Stephens, who dropped his birth name to Buzz Lightyear, is forced to revert back to his birth moniker after he was refused driving license by the DVLA.
The 26-year-old said that although the new identity was a great ice breaker, it led to severaly problems including an FA fine for gross misconduct after he filled in his new “real” name on a team sheet for his local side.
Buzz said: “I knew changing my name was not going to be easy but I did my research and had contacted the DVLA beforehand about getting a driving licence.
“They said as long as deed poll did not flag up the name, there should not be a problem - which there wasn’t.”
“They said because my name is a fictional character and they are a European company, when I went abroad for example and showed my ID, it would bring the DVLA in disrepute.
“But I’m sure there are so many Harry Potters who have not had a problem. It doesn’t seem quite fair.”
He added: “My friends and family know I don’t do things by halves. Buzz Lightyear is a childhood hero of mine. I have all the memorabilia and I’m not afraid to admit it.”
