Time Lord costume revealed

A first glimpse at Matt Smith as the new Doctor Who...

This is the first picture of the new Doctor Who actor Matt Smith in costume as he takes on the role as the 11th Time Lord.

Complete with tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots, Smith - pictured here with his co-star actress Karen Gillan (the Doctor's new assistant Amy Pond) - has begun filming for the new series to be aired in 2010.

The actor is taking over from David Tennant, whose last episodes will be shown at the end of this year.

Smith said on his first day of filming: "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

"The scripts are brilliant - I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

The new series will be led by writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, who takes over from Russell T Davies.

Moffat said: "Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way".
