Burglars targeted Cheryl and Ashley Cole's home in Surrey, allegedly looking to steal the Girls Aloud star's wedding rings, a report has claimed.
According to The Sun, football star Ashley called the police at 4.30am after being woken when the raiders forced through a window at the £4 million mansion.
It is believed that the would-be thieves thought it would be safe to break in as Cheryl is currently in Los Angeles (and was pictured without her ring) and Ashley was expected to be away on holiday with his mother Sue.
However, a last minute change of plan saw the sportsman remain at home, allowing his injured ankle to heal.
X Factor judge Cheryl is said to have two wedding rings with a combined value of £310,000.
Police reportedly believe that the thieves ascertained that the rings were left at home as the singer was not wearing either one when she was photographed at Heathrow Airport earlier this week.
The Sun reports that the suspects fled before the police showed up. It is currently unclear whether or not they managed to steal the rings, or steal anything else.
Ashley bought Cheryl's first ring for their 2006 wedding. He purcjased a second after the couple fought to renew their marriage after the sportsman's 2008 infidelity scandal involving hairdresser Aimee Walton.
Ashley is currently in a new sex scandal, as allegations have surfaced that he bedded multiple women after exchanging racy text messages.
