“If you write it, they will come,” Kevin Costner once said. Or something along those lines anyway.

Which is why we’ve decided it’s about time we honoured the Hollywood icon.
Down the years Costner has been in some modern-day classics, and of course his fair share of forgetables, but what are the very best he has starred in?
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Robin Hood is a legend of English folklore and his name has been used across various forms of media from video games to Robin Hood Bingo, and television to movies. In the case of the latter two, it’s not been the easiest role to take on. Just ask Russell Crowe.
However, Costner is certainly the most iconic Robin Hood of all time and Prince of Thieves has an all-star cast, that has made this 1991 movie stand out from the crowd. It grossed almost $400million worldwide and is certainly a cult classic and one of Costner’s most infamous roles.
Molly’s Game
Coming in more recent years is Molly’s Game, a biopic about the life of Molly Bloom, the famous high stakes poker host turned author that became embroiled in a celebrity scandal and the Russian mob. Costner plays Larry Bloom, the father of Molly and psychologist who has a rocky relationship with his daughter.
The film received rave reviews and has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 81%. The movie is based upon the memoir of Molly Bloom, who is expertly played by the wonderful Jessica Chastain.
The Highwaymen
The tale of Bonnie and Clyde is well known, and this 2019 movie tells it from the aspect of Frank Hamer and Maney Gault the Texas Rangers hot on their tail.
Costner takes the lead role in this Netflix Original, and it didn’t receive incredible reviews with the critics, but Costner is convincing, players Hamer incredibly well and is certainly one of the best films out there telling the story of the two notorious criminals.
Dances with Wolves
Kevin Costner’s tour de force is undoubtedly Dances with Wolves. He picked up Best Actor and Best Director at the 1991 Academy Awards with the movie based upon the 1988 book of the same name.
Costner tells the story of Union Army lieutenant John J Dunbar who travels to the Old West where he encounters the Lakota people. The film follows how their relationship develops and with plenty of twists and turns the film was a huge hit and is largely credited as resurrecting the Western genre.
A Perfect World
A Perfect World was directed by Clint Eastwood and was very well regarded and in particularly the acting of Costner who played escaped convict Robert Haynes.
Haynes escapes from Huntsville penitentiary with Terry Pugh, in which a young boy is taken hostage. Eastwood plays Texas Ranger Red Garnett in pursuit of Haynes but can he catch them before they cross the Texas border? The 1993 film came during Costner’s heyday and is well and truly a classic and finishes our top five in style.
