The United Nations International Telecommunications Union has released a study confirming that by the end of 2014, there will be close to three billion internet users around the globe.
The report added that two thirds of users are from the developing world and that the total number of internet users will represent 40per cent of the world’s population.
The report also found that around 90per cent of those who are not yet using the internet come from developing countries.
While Europe registered the highest internet penetration rate of 75per cent, the Asia-Pacific region has the largest population of internet users.
Brahima Sanou, the Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, said: “Behind these numbers and statistics are real human stories. The stories of people whose lives have improved thanks to ICTs.
"Our mission is to bring ICTs into the hands of ordinary people, wherever they live. By measuring the information society, we can track progress, or identify gaps, towards achieving socio-economic development for all.”
